RIYADH: Authorities on Sunday foiled an attempt to smuggle spoiled 158 slaughtered animals into Taif.
An official of the Taif municipality said the animals, which were not skinned, were not fit for human consumption. The animals, he said, have been rejected by the veterinary surgeons for their diseases or sickness. Animals with diarrhea, tuberculosis, brucellosis and pregnant animals are not considered fit for sacrifice, he added.
He pointed out that by law, these unscrupulous elements are not allowed to bring such dead animals through normal means. The Taif municipality is keen on putting a stop to the transport of such animals as their consumption is injurious to human health.
The official said that the smugglers would have sold the meat as fresh to restaurants and hotels at prices cheaper than the market rate.
