Istituto Marangoni to shape Saudi Arabia’s fashion future

RIYADH: Milan’s fashion and design-focused Istituto Marangoni will launch in Riyadh in August in collaboration with the Saudi Fashion Commission.

At a recent Ramadan event co-hosted by Istituto Marangoni and the Fashion Commission, key players explained why the move is a game-changer for aspiring creatives in the Kingdom.

Burak Cakmak, CEO of the Fashion Commission, highlighted the significance of having Istituto Marangoni in Saudi Arabia, stating that its presence will allow aspiring designers to receive education without the need for international travel. “Having an institution like this on the ground will make it much easier for anyone interested in the fashion sector to study, take short programs, or even combine work with education,” he told Arab News.

The new Higher Training Institute, located in the King Abdullah Financial District, will offer three-year undergraduate advanced training diploma programs across several disciplines, including fashion business, fragrances and cosmetics, fashion design, and fashion styling.

Stefania Valenti, CEO of Istituto Marangoni, said that students will also have the option to transfer to global campuses to complete their studies, to gain exposure to international fashion hubs. “We work with all the major global brands, and we aim to connect Saudi talent with international opportunities,” she said.

In an interview with Arab News, Valenti revealed that the institute plans to expand its programs beyond fashion and fragrance, with courses in product and interior design set to launch in the future. “We believe this should be the second wave of creative education in Saudi Arabia,” she said.

To mark the launch, Istituto Marangoni will offer 50 scholarships to Saudi students enrolling in its Advanced Training Diploma Programs, open to Saudi nationals holding a high school certificate or its equivalent.

DUBAI: US superstar Jennifer Lopez attended the opening night of “Othello” on Broadway in New York in a gown from Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad’s Fall/Winter 2024 couture collection.

The figure-hugging, two-piece look boasted glittering embellishments and a high neckline and Lopez donned a fur-like coat to combat the cold weather in New York on Sunday.

She attended the premiere of the Shakespeare adaptation starring Hollywood heavyweights Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. Directed by Kenny Leon, the two hour and 35 minute Broadway show is set in the near future and sees Washington play Othello while Gyllenhaal wowed critics as the villainous Iago.

“Gyllenhaal bounds, loose-limbed and bursting with malevolent energy, onto the … stage and barely takes a breath for the next nearly three hours. It is a remarkable performance, conversational, contemporary and unerringly convincing,” Deadline’s review of the performance read.

Besides Lopez, other celebrities who took in the show on its opening night included Anna Wintour, Colman Domingo, Keegan-Michael Key, Ariana DeBose and Samuel L. Jackson.

Lopez spent the evening in New York as news broke that “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a musical remake from director Bill Condon starring Lopez, is close to finding a buyer after its much talked about Sundance Film Festival premiere in January.

Variety reported that Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and independent studio LD Entertainment are in discussions to take on US domestic rights, though a deal has yet to close.

“Kiss of the Spider Woman” was independently financed in the high $30 million range, Variety reported.

The storyline centers on a political prisoner (Diego Luna), whose cellmate (Tonatiuh) creates a fantasy Hollywood narrative involving his favorite star, Ingrid Luna (Lopez).

It’s the second on screen version of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” following a 1985 feature from director Héctor Babenco. John Kander and Fred Ebb’s stage version opened on Broadway in 1993 and won seven Tony Awards.

The musical and both films adapted Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name.

DUBAI: Egyptian actress Jamila Awad is the face of Armani Beauty’s latest campaign for the perfume Si Passione Intense.

In the campaign videos and shots, directed by French filmmaker Woodkid, the actress wore a black suit while holding the perfume bottle.

Speaking about the collaboration, Awad reflected on the campaign’s central theme in a released statement.

“What makes your heart beat? This question resonates deeply with me — passion is what drives everything I do,” she said. “Si Passione Intense is more than just a fragrance; it’s a reminder to embrace what sets your heart on fire and live boldly.”

The new scent builds upon the original Si fragrance with a composition that opens with blackcurrant and pear, transitions into a floral heart of rose and jasmine, and concludes with base notes of vanilla and cedarwood. The fragrance is presented in a red ombre bottle.

Awad gained widespread recognition for her breakout role in the 2015 television series “Taht El Saytara” (“Under Control”), in which she portrayed the character of Hania, a troubled teenager struggling with addiction.

Following her debut success, she starred in several acclaimed projects, including the drama series “La Totfe’ Al Shams” in 2017 and the popular film “Hepta: The Last Lecture” in 2016, which further solidified her status as one of Egypt’s rising stars.

Awad is not the only Arab star to collaborate with Italian label Armani Beauty. Lebanese Jordanian actress Andria Tayeh was named the brand’s new Middle East beauty ambassador in February.

Tayeh, known for her roles in Austrian filmmaker Kurdwin Ayub’s “Mond” and Netflix’s hit series “Al Rawabi School for Girls,” expressed her excitement on Instagram at the time and wrote: “I am thrilled and honored to embark on this new journey with Armani beauty.

“This marks a real milestone for me, as the brand embodies values I have always cherished: timeless elegance, dramatic simplicity, and women empowerment,” she added. “Armani beauty reveals one’s charismatic personality in the most subtle and natural way. It’s this pure simplicity that creates an impact, and this is exactly what I hope to bring to the Arab cinema world.”

Zuhair Murad unveils Marina Rinaldi collection inspired by the Tang dynasty

DUBAI: Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad has unveiled his latest collaboration with Italian label Marina Rinaldi. Murad designed the brand’s Spring/Summer 2025 capsule collection inspired by China’s Tang dynasty.

Drawing from the dynasty’s introduction of peony cultivation in imperial gardens, Murad infused the collection with images of the flower.

The collection focuses largely on eveningwear.

“Grand evening gowns go beyond the pure object, they are a way of investing in one’s personal history,” the designer said in a released statement. True to his signature style, the collection features hourglass silhouettes and intricate hand-embroidered details.

The collection’s color palette mirrors another element of Tang dynasty artistry — delicate chinaware. Soft shades of cream, sky blue, aquamarine green and pink infuse the flowing chiffon gowns, pleated bodices and long plisse skirts.

“These looks wrap and enhance all women,” said Murad, highlighting the collection’s inclusive and flattering designs. The pieces are crafted from a mix of luxurious fabrics, including cady, pure silk georgette and shimmering sequins hand-sewn onto tulle to create a wave effect.

The silhouettes range from semi-fitted bodices that gently flare out to rich, flowing kaftans adorned with peony motifs. The collection also features long-sleeved gowns with deep V-necklines that emphasize the waist, along with sleek trouser suits for a modern touch.

The Tang dynasty ruled china from 618 to 907, with an interregnum between 690 and 705. The period was known for its flourishing arts and culture scene, with imperial ceremonies reviving the practice of hosting orchestras and companies of dancers. China in this period was also open to outside influences as as Arabian and Persian seamen did trade in the area.

This is Murad’s second collection for Marina Rinaldi that merges historical influences with contemporary fashion.

The designer has been recognized for his detailed craftsmanship in haute couture and bridal fashion. Since founding his brand in 1997, he has gained international attention. His creations have been worn by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, Sofia Vergara, Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, and Scarlett Johansson on major red carpets.

He is also one of a handful of Arab designers on the official Paris Fashion Week and Paris Haute Couture Week calendars.

Ikram Abdi spotted at Moncler show in French ski resort

DUBAI: Swedish Somali model Ikram Abdi attended the Moncler Grenoble Fall/Winter 2025 runway show in Courchevel, France, on Saturday, as Saudi Arabia-based model Georgina Rodriguez hit the snowy catwalk.

Courchevel is a French Alps ski resort located in the Tarentaise Valley. It is a part of Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world.

“The energy of winter sports, the warmth and joy of experiences shared on the snow, and the brand’s dedication to dressing all aspects of mountain life, combining high performance and high style, will be celebrated with a memorable brand experience at high altitude,” Moncler said in a statement released in December, before the unusual runway location was unveiled.

Fast forward to March 15 and the luxury label invited the who’s who of Hollywood to the resort’s snow-capped peaks as models walked a landing strip-turned-runway in a flurry of snow.

Abdi was joined by actress Ashley Park, Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, actress Jessica Chastain and South Korean star Lee Jae-wook, among others.

While the star-studded audience took in the show, Rodriguez walked the runway in a chunky knitted look complete with knee-high, fur-lined boots.

The model, who is the longtime partner of football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, has modelled for luxury brands before and was recently spotted sitting front row at Lebanese label Elie Saab’s Paris Fashion Week.

Elie Saab’s Ready-to-Wear Fall/Winter 2025-2026 collection transported the Paris Fashion Week audience to the world’s most exclusive mountain retreats, where relaxed glamour meets alpine allure.

At the show in March, Rodriguez wore a pristine white outfit that was in tune with Saab’s alpine theme. The ensemble featured a luxurious, textured top adorned with delicate feather-like details, adding a touch of avant-garde flair.

Rodriguez also recently joined forces with Lebanese dance group Mayyas, who won the 17th season of “America's Got Talent,” for a new campaign released earlier this month.

They starred in an advertisement for Egyptian real estate company Horizon Egypt Developments, where Rodriguez and the Mayyas promote Saada, a real estate development in New Cairo in Egypt.

For her part, Abdi, who posed for photographs at Moncler’s latest show, made her catwalk debut in 2018 during London Modest Fashion Week. She went on to walk for the likes of Iceberg and Charles Jeffrey and she has fronted campaigns for major international brands, including Burberry and Nike.
