Kyle Walker not regretting leaving Man City for lackluster AC Milan ahead of derby debut
  • Walker insists he hasn’t had any second thoughts — even when Milan were 2-0 down at home to Parma
  • “Definitely not. It’s football. Things happen in football,” he said

MILAN: England defender Kyle Walker could be forgiven for having some regrets over leaving Manchester City for AC Milan.
Especially after seeing close up how his new team are performing, with even Milan coach Sérgio Conceição saying his players are lacking “footballing basics.”
Walker joined Milan last week on loan, with the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
He watched Milan’s rollercoaster win over lowly Parma from the stands at San Siro last weekend. The Rossoneri were trailing 2-1 in injury time before two stoppage-time goals.
Walker, who was cup tied, was also just an observer on Wednesday for Milan’s Champions League match at Dinamo Zagreb, where the 10-man Rossoneri lost 2-1.
But Walker, who won six Premier League titles and the Champions League in seven seasons at City, insists he hasn’t had any second thoughts — even when Milan were 2-0 down at home to Parma.

“Definitely not. It’s football. Things happen in football,” he said. “But by the end of the game, we won 3-2. And that’s what the main things is. We got the victory that we wanted, that we needed. This is a step in the right direction.”
Possible debut in Milan derby
Man City’s long-serving right back left the Premier League club to get more playing time and explore a move abroad. Walker will likely get a baptism of fire on Sunday if, as expected, he makes his debut in the Serie A derby against fierce rival Inter Milan.
Defending champion Inter are second in Serie A, three points behind Napoli and with a game in hand. AC Milan also have a game in hand, but is 19 points behind Napoli.
Milan have won both derby matches this season, however; in the league in September and the Super Cup final this month.
“I’m expecting an exciting match. They’ll be looking for revenge after the Super Cup,” Walker said.
“This is where the character, the mentality comes in, that this is our crown now and we need to make sure we go to that game fully committed. Not just for ourselves and for the league table position but also for the fans as well.”
Walker won 15 major trophies at City after joining from Tottenham in 2017 and established himself as one of the best right backs in Premier League history.
At Milan, he finds himself in a team that are clearly lacking in confidence and leadership.
That is what the 34-year-old Walker has been brough in to help resolve.
“It’s what I have to do. At my age, from my experience, I can pass on that to the younger players,” Walker said. “But also I can’t do it alone.
“And I have seen that there is leaders but maybe the confidence is a little bit low. The rhythm is win game lose game, have a bad performance have a good performance. And you need a level of consistency.”
Conceição’s emotions encouraged
Milan are already on their second coach of the season, after Conceição replaced Paulo Fonseca at the end of last year.
Like Fonseca and previous coach Stefano Pioli, Conceição has criticized his players for their lack of determination and mentality, something he has been struggling to remedy as he strives to instil into AC Milan the same values he had as a player: Courage, combativeness and a hunger to win.
Conceição dropped to his knees and screamed after the late winner against Parma, before having to be restrained after the final whistle during a heated exchange with Milan captain Davide Calabria.
“I feel that from what I’ve been listening to over the last few days he (Conceição) has got a good idea, he’s got a good foundation that he wants to build this club on. And I think it’s needed,” Walker said.
“Sometimes there needs to be discipline, sometimes there needs to be that fire and emotion coming from the body because it projects onto the players. And recently the players have lacked a bit of that.”

Meronk leads on 10-under 62, Legion XIII show way in team race at LIV Golf Riyadh
  • It was just a year ago that Meronk made his LIV Golf debut after signing just before the season opener
  • Legion XIII, fueled by newest member Tom McKibbin, set a first-round scoring record by shooting 24-under as a team, with all four scores counting in the first round thanks to a format change starting this season

RIYADH: Playing under the lights is unique for most golfers, but Cleeks GC’s Adrian Meronk looked quite comfortable Thursday night at LIV Golf Riyadh presented by Ma’aden.

So did Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team.

Meronk shot a bogey-free 10-under 62 to grab the first-round lead in LIV Golf’s first nighttime round at Riyadh Golf Club.

Meanwhile, Legion XIII, fueled by newest member Tom McKibbin, set a first-round scoring record by shooting 24-under as a team, with all four scores counting in the first round thanks to a format change starting this season.

It was just a year ago that Meronk made his LIV Golf debut after signing just before the season opener. The adjustment period resulted in a slow start, but he finished the year in the top 24 Lock Zone. Now he’s looking to make a bigger splash.

“Last year was a very stressful beginning of the year for me, definitely, and this year I know what to expect,” Meronk said. “I feel like home, and I love it. I love being on LIV.”

Meronk made a coaching change in the offseason, which also resulted in a couple of swing changes. Those obviously kicked in nicely on Thursday, as he hit all 18 greens in regulation, including a 5-iron second shot from 250 yards at the par-5 sixth that settled 20 feet away for a two-putt birdie. He said his round felt “quite flawless.”

“I’m excited for the future because I really like how my golf game is shaping up,” Meronk said. “It feels much more comfortable, and I can control the ball much easier.”

Legion XIII also made its debut a year ago as LIV Golf’s first expansion team. Unlike Meronk, there was no adjustment period needed.

With Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton a lethal 1-2 punch, Legion XIII won their first event in Mayakoba, and added three more regular-season wins. Inconsistency on the back end of the roster was the team’s only weakness —  and that seems to have been answered with the addition of McKibbin and the continued development of LIV Golf’s youngest player, 20-year-old Caleb Surratt.

On Thursday, McKibbin and Surratt (66) each shot bogey-free rounds, as did Hatton (66). Rahm suffered the team’s only bogey in shooting 67. A year ago, his score wouldn’t have counted.

“I did not expect 5 under to be the worst score of the team,” Rahm said. “But here we are. The young guys have started the year strong.”

Like Meronk a year ago, McKibbin must adjust to life on LIV Golf. But he’s embracing all that his new environment has to offer. He even stopped to watch a mid-round light show — and then proceeded to make an eagle and three birdies in his final nine holes.

“A pretty awesome first day,” he said.

Alcaraz cruises, Tsitsipas scrapes through in Rotterdam
  • The top-seeded Alcaraz had far too much firepower and accuracy for Vavassori, ranked 317 in the world, running out a 6-2, 6-1 winner in just over an hour
  • Earlier Thursday, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas saved a match point and battled from a set down to overcome local hope Tallon Griekspoor in a three-hour marathon

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands: Carlos Alcaraz eased into the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam Open on Thursday with a comfortable straight-sets win over Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori.
The top-seeded Alcaraz had far too much firepower and accuracy for Vavassori, ranked 317 in the world, running out a 6-2, 6-1 winner in just over an hour.
“Today, I think I hit everything pretty well. I’m just hopeful I can keep going and be a bit better next round,” said the Spaniard after the match.
Wearing a breathing aid on his nose as he recovers from illness, Alcaraz got off to a flying start, breaking in the very first game and sealing the set 6-2 as the Italian pushed a forehand wide.
The Spaniard again broke early in the second set, taking the third game with a sumptuous lob. A second break followed quickly afterwards as the Italian double-faulted.
Alcaraz wrapped up the match with another break of serve, sending a powerful forehand return to the feet of the Italian, who could only poke it wide.
“I had no ups and downs today which is good for me, something I’m working on,” said Alcaraz.
Thursday’s victory was a stark contrast to his first-round match, when he required nearly three hours to dispatch local hero Botic van de Zandschulp.
“The first match of every tournament it’s never easy to get used to the conditions, so I’m just trying to make the most of the time I spent here in the first round,” he said.
Alcaraz will face Pedro Martinez for a place in the semifinals after his compatriot stunned Danish fifth seed Holger Rune 6-4, 6-1.
Earlier Thursday, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas saved a match point and battled from a set down to overcome local hope Tallon Griekspoor in a three-hour marathon.
The world number 12 eventually overcame spirited resistance from the Dutchman with a 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (8/6), 7-5 victory in a match lasting around three hours.
“I feel like I was here for 10 hours today. I felt like me and Tallon played for ages and I feel like it was a marathon. We started yesterday and finished today,” he joked.
“I always felt that he brought the best out of me. We were both fighting pretty well out on the court. These are matches that are going to be remembered.”
Tsitsipas now faces a quarter-final clash with Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci, who shocked second seed Daniil Medvedev in a marathon three-setter on Wednesday.
Also through to the quarter-finals in the bottom half of the draw is last year’s runner-up Alex de Minaur, who defeated Czech teenager Jakub Mensik 6-4, 6-4.

  • Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal were also on target for the record 31-time Spanish Cup winners as they swaggered to victory at an upset Mestalla stadium
  • Earlier Real Sociedad progressed with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man Osasuna, joining Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in a strong final four

VALENCIA: Ferran Torres hit a hat-trick as Barcelona routed Valencia 5-0 on Thursday to cruise into the Copa del Rey semifinals.
Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal were also on target for the record 31-time Spanish Cup winners as they swaggered to victory at an upset Mestalla stadium.
Earlier Real Sociedad progressed with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man Osasuna, joining Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in a strong final four.
Former Valencia forward Torres took the plaudits with his treble inside 30 minutes, taking full advantage of Barca coach Hansi Flick’s decision to rest striker Robert Lewandowski.
The Spaniard netted in the third minute, running onto a fine Alejandro Balde through ball and finishing clinically against his former side.
Torres netted the second after 17 minutes when teenage winger Yamal’s shot bounced off the post back into his path.
Lopez put Barcelona three up midway through the first half with a well-timed run expertly found by Pedri Gonzalez, rounding goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski and tucking home.
Torres completed his hat-trick after half-an-hour with an accurate low finish after Raphinha teed him up on the edge of the box.
The former Manchester City winger’s bright display offered food for thought, with Barcelona scoring at least five goals in the last four games where veteran Polish striker Lewandowski has not started.
Some Valencia fans started leaving the Mestalla stadium in anger, a constant theme around the club with owner Peter Lim criticized by supporters with chants and banners.
This was Valencia’s second thrashing at Barca’s hands in the space of two weeks, after the Catalans triumphed 7-1 at home in La Liga.
Valencia had a rare moment of cheer at the start of the second half when Umar Sadiq found the net but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The gangly Nigerian striker then won a penalty but that too was scrapped after he was shown to be offside again in the build-up.
At the other end Yamal struck the post again but this time the ball flew out and to safety for Valencia.
The 17-year-old Spain star got his goal eventually with a low effort which took a small deflection and beat Dimitrievski, who could still have kept it out.
In San Sebastian Ander Barrenetxea and Brais Mendez struck for hosts Real Sociedad before Osasuna had Alejandro Catena sent off for a wild challenge after 35 minutes.
Osasuna beat the same opposition 2-1 in La Liga on Sunday but Catena’s dismissal effectively ended any hope of mounting a comeback.
La Real reached the Copa semifinals for the third time in six seasons, last winning in the 2020 edition.

Liverpool thrash Spurs to reach League Cup final

Liverpool thrash Spurs to reach League Cup final
  • Liverpool will face Newcastle at Wembley on March 16

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool overturned a first leg deficit to reach the League Cup final with a 4-0 win on Thursday and ramp up the pressure on Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.
Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk were on target for the Reds, who will face Newcastle at Wembley on March 16 for the first silverware of the English season.
Liverpool remain on course for a quadruple in a dream debut season for Arne Slot.
They enjoy a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, have cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League and visit Championship strugglers Plymouth in the FA cup fourth round on Sunday.
Spurs’ trophy drought on the other hand goes on. Tottenham last lifted silverware in 2008 and Postecoglou now has one less opportunity to fulfil his promise of winning a trophy in his second season.
There is speculation the Australian could be shown the door if another goes awry away to Aston Villa in the FA Cup at the weekend with Spurs languishing 14th in the Premier League.
Despite having more glamorous titles to win, Slot showed his desire to make the League Cup his first trophy as Liverpool boss by naming his strongest available team bar the usual rotation in goal for cup competitions as Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson Becker.
New signing Kevin Danso was forced straight in to Tottenham’s injury-ravaged defense, while Mathys Tel also made an early debut off the bench after Richarlison hobbled off injured.
Liverpool had scored four in each of the previous two meetings between the sides at Anfield and repeated that feat to make light of their 1-0 first leg defeat in north London last month.
The home side had taken the first quarter to find their stride but the pressure built after Szoboszlai ran offside before sweeping home Salah’s pass.
From the Egyptian’s next delivery into the box, Spurs did not escape as Gakpo drilled in first time to move clear as the top scorer in this season’s competition with five goals.
Antonin Kinsky kept Salah waiting for his goal with a fine save moments later, but at the other end of the field Richarlison lay prone to leave Postecoglou’s team further depleted.
Already without record signing Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert in attacking areas, Tottenham never looked capable of mounting the threat they needed to survive the Liverpool onslaught.
The decisive blow came five minutes into the second half when Kinsky rushed off his line but was beaten to the ball by Darwin Nunez and caught the Uruguayan.
Salah ruthlessly dispatched the resulting penalty into the top corner for his 26th goal of the season.
Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch fired off the post as Liverpool put their foot down to kill the tie off.
The killer third goal came 15 minutes from time when Connor Bradley, who excelled in the absence of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, played in Szoboszlai to slot home.
Van Dijk then exposed Spurs’ struggles defending set-pieces by heading in the fourth from a corner to rub salt in the visitors’ wounds.
Newcastle are eying an end to their own 56-year wait for a major trophy after an impressive 4-0 humbling of Arsenal on aggregate in the other semifinal.
But the Magpies have the unenviable task of stopping Slot’s juggernaut if they are to do so.

  • Frenchman’s 95th-minute strike means that Al-Ittihad now lead Al-Hilal, although the Riyadh giants have a game in hand
  • Benzema grabbed his 14th goal of the season to move just one goal behind Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the standings

Karim Benzema left it late, but gave Al-Ittihad a 2-1 win at Al-Taawoun on Thursday that sent the Tigers three points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League.

The Frenchman’s 95th-minute strike means that Al-Ittihad now lead Al-Hilal, although the Riyadh giants have a game in hand.

Al-Ittihad’s in-form Abdulrahman Al-Oboud put the visitors ahead after 21 minutes, pouncing quickly on a rebound.

Coach Laurent Blanc thought he was taking his team back into the dressing room at the break with a lead, but 10 minutes into added time at the end of the first half, Musa Barrow equalized for the Buraidah club.

Faycal Fajr floated over a corner from the left that found Barrow unmarked at the far side of the area. His low volley took a deflection from Danilo Pereira to go past Predrag Rajkovic and into the back of the net.

The nine-time champions then poured forward in an attempt to get the win, but it proved to be a frustrating second half with a penalty decision overturned by VAR and the woodwork intervening.

However, five minutes into added time, Benzema grabbed his 14th goal of the season to move just one goal behind Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the standings.

Houssem Aouar burst free through the middle and then slipped a clever pass into the left side of the area for the former Real Madrid marksman to send a left-footed first-time shot into the back of the net and send the traveling fans into raptures. It was a dramatic end to the game and perhaps a crucial one in the title race.

Al-Hilal will go back into pole position if they beat Damac on Saturday.
