RIYADH: In the past month, 30 artists from 20 countries carved and sculpted their way through raw stone. Now, the annual Tuwaiq Sculpture symposium has opened its doors to the public, displaying their large-scale public works until Feb. 24 just north of ROSHN Front.

Under the theme “Dimensions of Movement,” each artist explored the progress and expansion they all witnessed across the Kingdom, specifically Riyadh, in their own language. The symposium is curated by Head Curator Marek Wolynski, and Associate Curator Fahad Al-Jebreen.

Wolynski told Arab News: “‘Dimensions of Movement’ pays tribute to how society can develop and integrate progress within daily life. I’m hoping that (it) captures a moment in time and serves as a point of reference for the generations to come.”

Once the sculptures are relocated to public spaces across the Kingdom’s capital, he hopes they will reflect the optimism, passion, and dynamism embedded within Saudi society.

The 30 artists not only carved raw granite into large-scale artworks, but also shared breakfasts and dinners, enjoyed cultural exchanges and Sunday excursions, demonstrating that Tuwaiq’s goal is to forge collaboration between artist communities around the world.

“It’s not only about the production of sculptures, it’s predominantly about the exchange of knowledge and transfer of skills that happens between artists themselves,” Wolynski said.

The program received an unprecedented 700 applications from 84 countries. After careful selection by the jury panel, 30 artists were selected from Saudi Arabia, China, India, Iran, through to the Arab world, Europe and South America, including Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, and others.

Spanish artist Jordi Raga has developed methodologies that combine constructive and subtractive techniques using manual and digital technologies. The work intends to behave as a sundial during the summer solstice.

Influenced by the notions of progress and evolution, Raga has centered two of Saudi Arabia’s most vibrant cities, Riyadh and Makkah, in his artwork titled “The Spark,” which combines techniques of manual and digital technologies. Using 3D software, he predicted a shadow that points from Riyadh to Makkah on June 21, reflecting the importance of will and hope as a driver of progress and evolution.

“The spark is the beginning of a chain reaction. So, all progress can create a revolution … I believe art is a catalyst as well,” Raga told Arab News.

The Spanish artist’s practice also champions sustainability. At Tuwaiq, he made a point to generate a spatial experience with minimal materials and waste.

The cohort features 10 Saudi artists, half of whom are women. Artist Azhar Saeed centered her work, titled “Extension,” around the Kingdom’s multitude of pioneering feats in various fields.

“It symbolizes an extension of past efforts, from the Kingdom’s foundation until now. The country is experiencing the largest construction renaissance in the modern Arab world, so we as Saudis are working quickly and ambitiously to cope with this change,” she told Arab News.

The five stone pieces, derived from the geometrical shape of honeycombs, are a nod to the essential component of cooperation between various projects under the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Saudi artist Lamia Moraished’s sculpture consists of horizontal columns resting on natural-textured stone pieces. The work intends to evoke a feeling of firmness and solidity even while in movement.

“The symposium wasn’t just about contributing a piece, but it was also a global cultural experience. We created friendships, exchanged knowledge and cultures, and learned about sculptural heritage in other countries as well,” she told Arab News.

The program also incorporates public engagement through ongoing workshops, panel discussions, masterclasses, and university and school visits. The program was designed to “allow for the community to embrace the transformation on different levels,” Wolynski said.

“This is very important, especially for children to see different models for things they can do in the future. If they see art, they can think maybe to become creators in multiple fields, so that’s already a catalyst,” Raga noted.

DUBAI: Day three of Dubai Fashion Week saw presentations by fashion label BLSSD, New York-based British Iraqi designer Tara Babylon, Dubai-based Lebanese designer Dima Ayad and a multi-designer showcase curated by department store Etoile La Boutique.

Somali Norwegian model Rawdah Mohamed walked the runway for Ayad, who stayed true to her brand’s founding ethos and offered up chic looks for a diverse range of body shapes. Houndstooth patterns were employed in various hues across the collection, while winter-appropriate fabrics and evening wear options in rippled gold also made an appearance.

Babylon took over the runway with her Autumn/Winter 2025 collection titled “Princess of Thieves.” The designer brought a warm and tropical vibe to the winter collection with Middle Eastern-inspired palm tree prints and earthy green tones. Weaving, printing and crochet techniques were used along with recycled cotton tapestry to create stylish winter pieces.

The Central Saint Martins and Parsons-educated designer is known for the performance-like aspect of her shows, and Monday night’s showcase in Dubai was no different. Models strode down the runway in a series of artfully created balaclavas that matched the ensembles.

Meanwhile, Etoile La Boutique’s invite-only showcase was a curated multi-designer collection titled “Twilight to Midnight.” The playful showcase offered up a sunshine yellow taffeta dress alongside a sequined mini-skirt and expertly cut leopard-print trench coat.

UAE-born and bred streetwear and ready-to-wear label BLSSD showcased its signature experimental styles in seasonal colours — a floor-grazing blazer paired with slouchy, masculine trousers was a particular draw at the show.

DHAHRAN: As part of the Japan Cultural Days event that ends on Feb. 8, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) is hosting a Kimono Exhibition, offering visitors an up-close look at these traditional Japanese garments synonymous with the country.

Maha Abdulhadi, creative programs specialist at Ithra, explained the significance of the exhibition to Arab News.

“The Kimono Exhibition at Japan Cultural Days is not just a fashion showcase — it (is) a deep cultural experience. It celebrates Japan’s artistic legacy, demonstrates the adaptability of tradition in a modern world, and strengthens cultural exchange between Japan and global audiences,” Abdulhadi said.

As one of the most iconic symbols of Japanese tradition and craftsmanship, the kimono has served as a representation of Japan’s rich cultural identity and its textile artistry, showcasing centuries-old techniques of dyeing, weaving and embroidery, while also demonstrating how contemporary designers have reinterpreted the kimono for modern sentiments.

The exhibition also highlights the significance of kimonos in different celebratory occasions, showcasing how their styles vary depending on the event.

The patterns and fabrics of kimonos often reflect seasonal changes, festivals and artistic aesthetics, further emphasizing their connection to Japanese culture.

This free exhibition showcases 17 kimonos in total, carefully selected to highlight the evolution of this iconic Japanese attire.

Ten kimonos were loaned from the Japan Kimono Museum in Fukushima. These pieces represent antique kimonos from different historical periods, reflecting the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of the Meiji (1868-1912), Taisho (1912-1926), and Showa (1926-1989) eras. The Japan Kimono Museum, which opened in 2022, houses the largest collection of kimonos in Japan, with approximately 10,000 items in total, including accessories.

 “I would like to add that the design of one of the uchikake kimono displayed from the Japan Kimono Museum is by Kansai Yamamoto, a fashion designer who was active in Paris Fashion Week and other events,” Abdulhadi added.

In addition to the historical pieces, seven kimonos in the exhibition came from a private collector based in Japan, showcasing modern interpretations of the traditional garment.

The selection of kimonos was curated by Ithra’s Museum & Exhibition unit. The curatorial team focused on presenting the evolution of kimonos, emphasizing their intricate dyeing techniques, exquisite craftsmanship and regional styles that tell captivating stories of tradition and heritage.

Beyond being a fashion exhibition, the event as a whole, which began on Jan. 23, was created to foster cultural exchange as the two countries celebrate 70 years of Saudi-Japan diplomatic relations.

RIYADH: The first-ever edition of Art Week Riyadh will be held from April 6-13, hosted by the Saudi Visual Arts Commission.

Set to run under the theme “At The Edge,” the event will gather local and international galleries, cultural institutions, artists, patrons, collectors, and art enthusiasts at a week-long event to take place across the city of Riyadh, headquartered at JAX District in Diriyah.

Alongside exhibitions, Art Week Riyadh will put on a program of talks, workshops, and performances for the public.

According to a released statement, the “inaugural edition will explore thresholds, transitions, and liminal spaces, reflecting Riyadh’s role as a center of global cultural engagement.”

Dina Amin, CEO of the Visual Arts Commission, commented: “Art Week Riyadh is about building a robust and inclusive framework—one that supports innovation, creativity and thought leadership, and an unwavering commitment to preserving and advancing culture. By bringing together diverse elements of the Saudi art sector, it aims to empower and nurture practitioners and foster a shared vision of growth, opportunity, and cultural enrichment.”

DUBAI: Veteran Egyptian director Ahmed Shawky was appointed president of the critics jury at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival this week, coinciding with the festival’s announcement that the Arab film “Yunan” will compete for the top Golden Bear prize.

Shawky will preside over the largest jury panel convened annually by the International Federation of Film Critics, guiding 12 international critics in assessing films across different festival categories. 

Alongside serving as jury president, he will also join the international competition jury, where he will work alongside critics Maja Korbecka from Poland and Francisca Romero Pezoa from Chile.

Meanwhile, “Yunan” is directed and written by Syrian filmmaker Ameer Fakher Eldin.

It is among the 19 films competing for the Golden Bear and is the only Arab film featured in the main competition lineup.

“Yunan” first premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, where it secured the Edipo Re Award in 2021.

It also received several recognitions, including the Best Arab Film Award and the Shadi Abdel-Salam Award for Best Film at the Cairo International Film Festival.

The film tells the story of an Arab writer who, feeling lost in exile in Hamburg, travels to a secluded island in the North Sea with thoughts of ending his life. There, he meets an elderly woman who helps him rediscover his desire to live.

London’s JD Malat Gallery opens first Middle East outpost in Dubai

DUBAI: The year 2025 bodes well for art lovers with the opening of London’s JD Malat Gallery in Dubai.

The gallery, from London’s swanky Mayfair area, has expanded its footprint with its first outpost in the Middle East, exploring the regional art scene from the UAE.

Located in Downtown Dubai, close to the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Opera, the JD Malat Gallery is at the epicenter of the city's cultural activities.

The 1,700 square meter gallery opened on Jan. 29, with French gallerist Jean-David Malat telling Arab News “Dubai is a dynamic city, rich in culture and with enormous potential to showcase local and regional artists.

“The JD Malat Gallery will be an opportunity to meet the public, particularly young people who have a considerable interest in art and what's new,” he added.

After visiting Dubai in March 2024, following a 17-year absence, Malat highlighted the city's evolution, noting “a new face, a new energy,” which prompted him to return and expand his activities in the UAE.

Less than a year after that visit, JD Malat Gallery opened its doors to the public, showcasing the work of 14 artists, including Kojo Marfo, Conrad Jon Godly, Santiago Parra, Henrik Uldalen, Ed Moses, Andy Moses, Luis Olaso, Ur Kasin, Tim Kent, Sophie-Yen Bretez, Georg Óskar, Masayoshi Nojo, Katrin Fridriks and Yann Leto.

For Japanese artist Nojo, the themes of memory and the passage of time are explored in works that play with texture, shadow and sober colors. The artist is known for blending contemporary visual languages with Japanese aesthetics.

Since meeting in New York in 2017, the Nojo-Malat duo has enjoyed a string of successes through various exhibitions, including shows in London in 2020 and 2024.

“He's an extraordinary artist. I love his work. Very peaceful,” said Malat.

Meanwhile, London-based Ghanaian artist Marfo’s flamboyant exude energy.

He uses traditional Akan art to highlight social issues such as inequality, religion, politics and spiritualism.

Malat is known for discovering and launching emerging artists, and this is one of his objectives in Dubai. This was the case when he met the Ghanaian artist. Having launched a competition in London in 2020, Malat was looking to select 20 artists to promote and relaunch his gallery after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I worked with art experts and Hollywood stars among others, to give the opportunity to 20 UK-based artists (out of 2,500 applications received) to organize a group exhibition with the proceeds going back to the artists,” explained Malat.

On the opening day of the exhibition, Marfo arrived by bus with two paintings in hand.

“I loved his pieces. Now he's become a star. Kojo Marfo is an international artist,” he added. 

For Malat, it's important to meet artists in person and take the time to get to know their story, to help them tell it.

“Art is personal. When you sell art, you're selling a moment of the artist,” he stressed..

Today, the gallerist plans to spend his time between London and Dubai to discover the region's talent.

“I've seen a lot of very interesting young artists in Abu Dhabi. There is a lot of talent and I will take my time in the selection process, but I know it will happen very soon,” he said.

The gallery is committed to the community — one of its objectives is to organize public thematic discussions around regional and international artists, with the participation of collectors, museum directors and art fair directors.

“In London, we host students, art schools, the Sotheby's Institute, and we're trying to recreate the same atmosphere in Dubai,” Malat said.
