Tears of joy for Palestine players on night of history and emotion
  • The 3-0 win over Hong Kong was the team’s first AFC Asian Cup win, and confirmed progress to Round of 16

The whistle went, and for the first time in 90-plus minutes Mohamed Salah did not seem to know what to do.

That was just for a second, before the Palestine defender sank to the turf at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium and cried. He was not the only one. It is not that hard to guess what he must have been thinking about and hard not to wonder if the people back in his native Gaza had any idea of what had happened in Qatar, had any idea of what their national team had managed to do in the biggest competition in the world’s biggest continent.

The message was clear however; this was all for Gaza.

Salah plays his football in Egypt but has many family members and friends in his homeland, where people are fearing for their lives amid the daily death and destruction that comes down from the skies. More than 25,000 have died, thousands more have been wounded and lost their homes.

On this field in Doha, however, something amazing happened. Here was a story about Palestine on the international stage that was not about bombs and missiles and death but about hope, pride and happiness. It is only football, but it is also so much more.

Talk about history being made in football can be cheap and cliched but then there are moments such as Tuesday that really do fit the description.

That was Palestine winning their first game at the Asian Cup, a victory that was even bigger as it sent them into the knockout stage, also for the very first time.

The 3-0 win over Hong Kong will never be forgotten. It was almost enough to send the team into second in the group above the UAE but the narrowest of goal difference margins means third place will have to do.

Oday Dabbagh, the star of the team, burst into life in this game, scoring Palestine’s first with a header before right-back Musab Al-Battat sent over another perfect cross for Zeid Qunbar to nod home.

On the hour, Tamer Seyam’s thunderous shot from outside the area bounced back off the crossbar for Dabbagh to get his second goal and his team’s third.

They have played their way into the hearts of all Palestinian fans. This was a team effort with the starting 11, the substitutes and the entire squad coming together.

This is a team that knows hardship. Players such as Salah and Mahmoud Wadi may play overseas but are from Gaza and have family and friends to worry about. Coach Makram Daboub couldn’t call up players from Gaza as he knew that they would not be able to report for duty. Preparation has been tough on and off the pitch.

“What can I say? I am so proud,” Daboub told Arab News. “We knew that we could do this but we had to work so hard in all of the three games. Against Hong Kong we knew that we had to win and knew what we needed to do, and we worked hard and managed to qualify.”

It started against Iran. Before the game kicked off, Iranian fans showed their sympathy for what the people of Gaza are going through. It was an emotional moment but then it was followed by some clinical finishing from Team Melli who ran out 4-1 winners. It looked like it was almost over before it began and it was not, in truth, a great performance from the losing team but they kept fighting and working and bounced back.

“I always had confidence in our players. Iran are one of the top teams in Asia and we played well in the second half of the game with the United Arab Emirates,” Daboub said. “We have improved in every game and while the second round will be tough, I have faith in my players.”

Australia are the most likely opponents. November’s World Cup qualifier may have gone the way of the Socceroos but it was only a 1-0 defeat and Palestine had their chances. This is also a knockout game where anything can happen. Extra time and penalties are always looming like shadows and a red card or bad decision can change everything.

But everything has already changed.

“This is for the people of Palestine and we have delivered a message to the rest of the world that these are people who deserve a better life and they love peace and freedom,” Daboub said.

And they love their football team.

FIFA bans Venezuelan soccer official for 5 years and orders near-$1M fine for financial wrongdoing
  • FIFA’s ethics committee had also charged Álvarez with breaching “duty of loyalty”
  • The verdict can be challenged on appeal

ZURICH: FIFA has banned a Venezuelan soccer official from the sport for five years for financial wrongdoing and fined him nearly $1m.
Manuel Álvarez was secretary general of the Venezuelan soccer federation when his conduct enabled the “misappropriation and misuse” of its and FIFA’s money, soccer’s world body said announcing the verdict late Friday.
FIFA’s ethics committee had also charged Álvarez with breaching “duty of loyalty” and “general duties” under its code.
FIFA, which makes at least $2 million available in funding each year to all 211 member federations, gave no details about the financial misconduct. The verdict can be challenged on appeal.
It is unclear how FIFA can enforce payment of the fine if Álvarez does not return to soccer.
Venezuela is the only member of the 10-nation CONMEBOL group of South American federations that has never qualified to play at the men’s World Cup.

Frankfurt drop Marmoush against Dortmund, confirm Man City talks
  • Marmoush has been heavily linked with a winter move to City after a stellar first half of the season.
  • The 25-year-old has scored 15 goals in 17 league games

BERLIN: Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday left forward Omar Marmoush out of their matchday squad for the home clash with Borussia Dortmund due to “transfer talks” with Manchester City.
Marmoush has been heavily linked with a winter move to City after a stellar first half of the season.
The 25-year-old has scored 15 goals in 17 league games, one fewer than leader Harry Kane, and laid on 10 assists.
“Eintracht Frankfurt is currently in talks with another club for the transfer of Omar Marmoush. The player is therefore not part of the team today,” the club wrote on social media just hours before the Dortmund clash.

Speaking with DAZN before the game, Frankfurt sporting director Markus Kroesche confirmed Marmoush was set “to leave us in the direction of Manchester City.”
“It looks like Omar will be leaving us and that’s why he’s not in the squad.
“We’ve been in regular discussions with Manchester City for the past few days.”
The Egyptian arrived in Frankfurt on a free transfer from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023.
German and international media reported the struggling English champions, who sit 12 points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, are set to pay up to 80 million euros ($82 million) for Marmoush.

  • Tedesco was appointed in February 2023 to replace Roberto Martinez and rebuild the squad as the country’s “golden generation” departed
  • Tedesco’s team qualified for Euro 2024 but were eliminated in the last 16 by France

BRUSSELS: Belgium’s football association on Friday announced the sacking of national team coach Domenico Tedesco after disappointing performances at Euro 2024 and in the Nations League.
“Unfortunately, the Red Devils did not perform as we hoped at Euro 2024, just as they did in the next Nations League campaign,” the football association (RBFA) said on their website.
Tedesco was appointed in February 2023 to replace Roberto Martinez and rebuild the squad as the country’s “golden generation” departed.
Tedesco’s team qualified for Euro 2024 but were eliminated in the last 16 by France, who then beat Belgium twice more in the Nations League as the Red Devils finished third in their group.
They face a relegation play-off against Ukraine in March.
“I was always proud to be the coach of the Red Devils, we achieved great things together,” Tedesco said.
“This team is still at the beginning of its development and will cause a sensation in the coming years. I wish the players, the great employees of the federation and the fans all the best from the bottom of my heart.”
Five members of Tedesco’s support staff and coaching team were also fired.
“Domenico made an excellent start as national coach and proved that there are still great things possible, even after the send-off of the previous generation,” said RBFA CEO Peter Willems.
“He has integrated a number of young players into the team, and his successor can build on this. We would like to thank him and his team for the pleasant cooperation, their hard work and dedication, and wish them all the best for the future.”
The RBFA did not announce a timetable for appointing a successor but Belgian media named Frenchmen Rudi Garcia and Thierry Henry as leading candidates.
Belgium kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a trip to North Macedonia in June.

  • The Norwegian joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and has scored 111 goals in 126 games for the club

LONDON: Erling Haaland has signed a new 9.5-year deal at Manchester City that will keep him at the Etihad until 2034, the Premier League champions announced on Friday.
The 24-year-old striker’s existing deal was due to expire in June 2027 but he has now committed his future to the club for the next decade.
The Norwegian joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and has scored 111 goals in 126 games for the club.
“I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club,” said Haaland.
“Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters, and it’s the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.
City’s outgoing director of football Txiki Begiristain said: “Everyone at the club is absolutely delighted that Erling has signed his new contract.
“The fact he is signed for so long demonstrates our commitment to him as a player, and his love of this club.
“He has made an incredible impact already in his time here and his amazing numbers and records speak for themselves.”

Kvaratskhelia posts farewell video to Napoli fans ahead of expected transfer
  • “I spent an amazing time here, we shared a lot of memories together, experienced a lot of amazing emotions,” a solemn-looking Kvaratskhelia said
  • Napoli coach Antonio Conte confirmed last Saturday that Kvaratskhelia requested a move

NAPLES, Italy: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia posted a farewell video to Napoli fans on Thursday ahead of a widely expected transfer away from the Italian league.
The 23-year-old Georgia winger, who starred in Napoli’s Serie A title-winning team in 2023, has been linked in France with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, while Premier League leader Liverpool also are reportedly interested.
Kvaratskhelia posted a video on Instagram, with subtitles in both Italian and English, to directly address Napoli fans who affectionately nicknamed him “Kvaradona” in homage to late Argentina great Diego Maradona, the club’s greatest-ever player.
“It’s hard for me, but it’s time to say goodbye. I spent an amazing time here, we shared a lot of memories together, experienced a lot of amazing emotions,” a solemn-looking Kvaratskhelia said. “Napoli was my home, where I felt wonderful thanks to each of you. The path we went through together is still in my mind and it is very emotional. I remember my first goal and feelings.”
Napoli coach Antonio Conte confirmed last Saturday that Kvaratskhelia requested a move.
“I spoke to the player who confirmed this decision to me,” Conte said at that time. “I am disappointed, it was a bolt from the blue, and I am taking a step back.”

PSG have lost superstars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe and need to reinvigorate an attack lacking efficiency.
Kvaratskhelia fits the bill as both a scorer and skillful provider with both speed and devastating dribbling ability.
He scored 30 goals in 107 games overall for Napoli and had great chemistry with striker Victor Osimhen during the title-winning campaign — which ended a 33-year wait for the Serie A title, with Maradona starring in that 1990 team.
“Napoli is a football city, Napoli lives with football and I am happy to have been part of this great history,” he said, before stroking a ball attached to leg of a statue of Maradona, and then bowing his head. “It was a great honor for me to wear this journey.”
He pledged to explain the reasons for his decision to leave when the time is right.
“I say goodbye but you will always be in my heart,” said Kvaratskhelia, who wore the No. 77 jersey.
“I know that your heart is very broken but one day I will tell you everything.”
He ended the video with a visit to the Spagnoli district where Maradona’s giant mural is located. Maradona, who died in November 2020, is revered in the city.
“I could not leave without visiting this special place as this is where you get the most genuine feeling of what Diego means to this city. Here he is admired above all else,” Kvaratskhelia said. “I have to say goodbye to Diego. Goodbye Diego, Goodbye Napoli.”
